A2 Drama Witchy Piece - The Pendent of Youth

We have decided to change our whole piece around, as we felt we had gotten stuck in a rut with our first idea. However we have tried to incorporate as much as we could into 'The Pendent of Youth' which has made turning our whole piece upside down a whole lot easier.

"Magic is not just inside the circle, She is Everywhere."

Synopsis

The Pendent of Youth:

Summary:
Prologue: The witches kill lizzie, physical theatre.
Scene 1: The witches are sentenced to be hanged (The Trial) - Here they disclose that they will return (and a brief mention of how). Ends with them being hanged, mention the pendant.
Scene 2: Molly and Sarah are in the street walking to their grandparent’s house. They go to the attic, looking in the attic for something quirky to wear for the Halloween party. Lizzie freezes time and knocks off the box, they find the pendant next to the book which explains how the pendant works, as they read the narrator tells the audience what it says. There are projections of molly and Sarah (as ancestors) to help explain the story. Molly and Sarah find out that the blood had to be spilled in holy land so they decided to do it at their party because it’s in a graveyard.
Scene 3: Molly and Sarah stumble onto the stage a bit drunk and silly, with the pendant, book and alcohol bottles. They become blood sisters. The pendant starts to glow. They hear a cackle and hide, while the witches come back, physical theatre. They arrive, girls freak out more physical theatre.
Scene 4: Girls appear with projection of bedroom with pillows and blankets and talk about what happened.

scene 6: Narrator telling the audience about how the witches went and found a young boy or girls and drained his blood into the necklace which it quickly rejected because it hadn’t finished draining whoevers blood awakened them. This can also be represented through silhouetted projections behind the narrator. The witches then come on very minimal stage similar to prologue but with more light go nuts because they have already started ageing and cast a spell so the necklace will lead them to the girls. A bright light appears of stage – representing the spell showing their path the witches go towards it and disappear off stage.
Scene 7: Narrator speech, goes to the girls bedroom again, still shaken and scared talking about what happened perhaps looking through the book – conversation, conversation, conversation – large shaking sound emits kind of like a mini earthquake and the necklace appears represented by projection, stage is flooded with light. The girls start freaking out not understanding how it appeared or what’s going on, girls get away.
Scene 8: Narrator speech, girls back in attic going through book trying to figure out how to get rid of them find a spell to destroy the necklace, they have two out of three all ready, last ingredient is the witches hair. Find a spell to summon a witch and head to the grave yard.
Scene 9: Witches appear on blocks as the girls exit stage. At the bottom of the stage the girls re-enter and start chanting the spell, the witches above feel the pull and get excited cackling about silly little girls witches exit and graveyard appears again the two girls are getting ready setting up there spell to destroy the necklace.
Scene 10: Witches arrive bit of conversation girls try to get there hair using trickery, perhaps confusing them with their phones and music, they fail witches use magic and bind them possible chance for physical theatre here. Narrator steps in – scene freeze – speech – gets involved in the story and takes the hair from the witches and puts it into the girls spell. Scene un freezes spell starts bubbling and working, the witches panic and start fighting amongst them accidently knocking the necklace into the spell. As the necklace is destroyed lights start flickering girls get free as their magic breaks and small blackout and the witches are covered in white powder showing age and decay they fall to the floor dead and the girls rejoice – blackout.
Scene 11: Narrator ending the story.

  • Reason for the witches to kill: Witches would Age without the souls of young people (old time virgins) which are trapped in the pendant worn by the coven leader Ashley upon sacrifice. The pendant keeps the witches "alive".
  •
  • Witches are brought back when the two girls find the pendant and one of them cuts their hand on it, adding blood to the pendant revives the witches from their grave of thousands of years.
  •
  • Witches kill by releasing all the blood from the body of the chosen sacrifice, which is absorbed by the pendant. This is how the soul is captured within the pendant as the soul is attracted to the blood.

Projections

We have now decided agaist the projections as we think there may be a problem putting up the projector as we cant get it high enough. The projections would cover the whole stage, us included. We ahve also decided that we can use the projection for the second scene, in which we are hanged. This is the projection that ashley has put together to crete three hanging women:

Ashley Arnott's photo. (Better lighting (more like night time))

If we use this one which I think is the best image, Ashley will edit out the 'shutterstock')

Ashley Arnott's photo.(could work, but kind of sideways?)

Ashley Arnott's photo.(Very light.. we are in the graveyard at night time)

 Music

Music during Lizzy's Narration:

Prologue:

Scene 1:

Scene 3:

Witches chant (Wiccan Music):

Pagan/Wicca- Earth Air Fire Water Elemental Chant:

Sentencing of three witches:

 Narration and some other stuff

Lizzy After Prologue:

So I died.
My bodies out of breath.
My spirit stuck between Satan and god....
Life and death.

Anchored to this earth,
Like a bird without it's wings.
Forced to always watch.
Such atrocious things.

But now I tell a tale.
Of my killers.
And some girls
that we're forced to derail.

We start with their family,
From long, long ago .
They exacted my revenge.
But they didn't end the blow.

Narrator;
The witches have their pendant, but one vital ingredient is missing in order for them to gain the thing that most desire. Eternal youth. To keep their faces from turning haggard and wrinkled, they must sacrifice the blood of a young child and bleed the youthful blood onto the pendant. So this is what they did.
The three witches fled the grave yard to find their sacrifice. Any child would do, so the first unfortunate youngster that they laid eyes on was snatched and... dragged to the woods. The witches eyes were glowing with selfish joy at the thought of the youth they would gain as they drew out a dagger to the poor child. Evilness like no other. They raised the dagger and the child took her last breath… (pause)…. Another soul was taken that night by the witches. Another lot of innocent blood was spilt, another life lost…

Witches Come Back:
The spark has been added and now it’s time for the unrest souls of darkness, lies and hatred to refresh, reawaken and reanimate to cause destruction to this strange new world, filed with moving metal boxes and peculiar sounds.
All they need now is to find the pendent that gave them life.
If these witches are not stopped, abominable things will happen. The world as we know it will be ancient history, and we will live in complete misery.

Scene 9:
The three old hags can feel the pendants power drawing them towards it. Soon they’ll find the girls and undertake their grisly revenge. These witches don’t know what in store, but will they find out after all?
The two outlandish girls are mixing things together to create the spell. Ingredients are bundled up, mixed together and burned above a candle. With pig tales and slug trails thrown into the mix an extraordinary spell is underway to rid the pendent of its power.

Ending? (Now has been changed)
(First version): These souls were joined forever, where broken by mistrust. The hatred and the lies between them smashed a sacred trust. The tears that came with shadows, filling up the room. They took my heart and left me with my soul that felt the doom. These moments will be lost in time like tears shed in the rain.
A beautiful sorrow, and an eternal regret. Some final peace that lays my soul to rest.
(New version): Their souls were joined forever were broken by mistrust. The hatred and the lies between hem smashed a scared trust. These moments will be lost in time like tears shed in the rain. The witches gone; the girls now safe. The endless nightmare is finally over. The tortured souls of victims past, are free to move on to the world above, a world where peace always reigns. The witches end is also mine, my soul finally laid to rest.

Sarah and Molly's chant:

Bide the Wiccan Law ye must,
In perfect lova and perfect trust.
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfil:
An' ye harm none, do what ye will.

What ye send forth comes back to thee
So ever mind the law of three,
Follow this with mind and heart,
Marry ye meet, and merry ye part.

Narration scene 5:
But little did the witches know that blood had already been spilt that night of teen girls. Their blood sister chant was what awoke the witches. To give them the youth that their ancient bones thrive for they must drain those girls bodies dry to feed the pendant, without this the witches are merely but a pile of dust.

1st piece.. (not using storyline of this one):

Performing

We have so far worked on the first half of the play and have initial ideas on what it should be like. We have tried to include as much physical theatre as p[possible within our piece.

This was our first go at using physical theatre and we have decided to use this scene as the transportation scene as we feel the use of physical theatre in this scene conveys rather nicely of the witches being transported into another world:

*Poems(ADD REST OF POEMS)
We decided up the scenes between us and wrote poems according to what was happening in that particular scene.

Scene 1 Poem-

Once upon a time,
in a kingdom far away,
a room of evil beings
await to meet their fate.
*Ursula dialogue*
the judges voice bellowed
the next case was ordered in
three witches waiting
for their sentencing to finally begin
for the sins of catching princesses
the witches have to pay
the rabbit judge has spoken
hes sending them away.

Scene 2 poem

So the witches have been banished,
to the mortal world below.
Where could they be dropped ,
will we ever know?
How will these witches cope,
with the mortal day to day?
No magic, no broom sticks, no potions,
how will they live this way?

 Poem Scene 3:

The train hurried through,
At the speed of light.
It whooshed the witches off their feet,
So they huddled tight.

Prodding, poking, shoving, squirming,
Children scream in terror at their face.
If only they had their wands, a potion or a chant,
They could make them all be quiet and send them to someplace.

Poem Scene 4:
As days past the witches started to give in.
Their witchey ways decayed and their laziness became a sin. T
hey sat ate and slept all throughout the day,
in front of the square box that entertained away.
Xfactor, Hollyoaks and eastenders are forever on end
the mortal world may become a new trend.
But no said one we must leave and get back to the kingdom with pase
as I will not sit and watch these powers go to waste.

I wrote the Scene 5 poem:

This kingdom is a different one,
to one you've ever seen.
For magic and wonder and times of great fun,
like nowhere you've ever been.

A princess stands outside this club,
entrancing people inside.
She's sorta like a lion cub..
there's no point trying to hide!

Now along come three hobbling witches,
about to change her night.
Dresses it seems in character,
just for all Hallows night.

Scene 7 poem

The witches are confused
They don't know why they're not home?
Why don't hadn't the shot of potion worked?
"It was her"the witches moan.

as their party princess sleeps,
the witches begin to wonder
they grab the rope and grab the tape
and wake her from her slumber.

*Lighting
For the fairy land we have discussed uses very 'loud/bright' colours such as: pink, blue, purple, green. This will add to the fairy tale quality.
For London we are going to use mostly naturalistic time colours such as, yellow. This creates a big contrast between the two worlds.
Scene 1 - fairy land courtroom will have (pink and blue already there) pinks/whites/purples/yellows etc.. The pink and blue will be spotlights on each witch.
While being sentenced, the lights could maybe change colour (flickering?) to portray a tense moment.

*Music (ADD LINKS FOR THE REST OF THE MUSIC FOR BOTH WORLDS)

Fairyland: We have decided that the music for the fairy land should be mostly strings creating a happy and sad vibe.
London: Some suggestions for the music have been 'lamb, portise head and massive attack.
We have decided on changing the music for the banishment from the wicked witches theme, from the wizard of oz to something more original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOzCgLA3tKw

(which is called: Epic/Action - Royalty Free Music Download: Tense HD 3D)
Music needs to come in while sentencing.

*Set  (ADD PICTURE OF THE SET WE HAVE/ FINISH PAINTING)
We have started making cardboard set for our piece, as it is easy to move and can help us set the scene and get into character.
So far we have made:
-a bath
-lots of flowers
-mushrooms
-podium for the judge
-bushes
-street signs
We have also started to paint them but have so far only done the red.

WITCHCRAFT
 Physical world-----Narrator                                       -London
-----Just London                                 -Magical world (starts there and shows             them being kicked out and into a different world (London). The inner city will be busy (witched confused) This is a big contrast. English people are awkward. Tube, apartment (window projected onto back of the stage) it will be a bit destroyed/ burned from them using their magic but they find out that their magic does not work properly in this world.
 Lots of Multi Media usage.
There will be witches and maybe a fairy god mother to make it seem more like a fairy tale?
In London the witches get lazier and lazier as they have nothing to do.
Fairy tale land.
-getting kicked out
-courtroom like in Alice in wonderland (judge up high- rabbit judge? -v. big ears)
-per-recorded??
-wizard of oz music when banished (Musics a bit crazzzzyy)
-whilst being banished you could use physical theater, which could create an effective way of transitioning from one world to the next
-bit of physical theater
-pinks, blues and purples for the fairy land (peaceful, pretty colours -quite fairy like)
-glitter!! balloons and paper mache for the clouds
-could start with projecting a book- "once apon a time.. in a kingdom far away.." This creates a fairy tale like start to the piece which could set the mood nicely.

WITCHCRAFT
  • Rumple Stiltskin- conniving.
